Durud after the du’a of Qunut

Question:

Is it authentically proven that Sayyiduna Hasan (radiyallahu ‘anhu) would recite Durud after Qunut in the Witr Salah? Is this a Sunnah?

Answer:

Imam Nasai (rahimahullah) has recorded a narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Hasan (radiyallahu ‘anhu) wherein he has narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) taught him the du’a of Qunut; ending with the words “Wa Sallallahu ‘Alan Nabiyyi Muhammad”.

(Al-Mujtaba, Hadith: 1746)

Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) has graded the chain of this narration as sound (hasan) [and in some places authentic – sahih],

Hafiz Ibn Hajar and others (rahimahumullah) have graded it as weak due to a break in the chain. (munqati’).

(Al-Adhkar, Hadith: 159, and At-Talkhisul Habir, Hadith: 1270; Also see: Al-Liwa-ul Mu’allim, pg. 111 onwards, Al-Qawlul Badi’, pgs. 373-376, and Al-Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol. 2 pg. 300).

Nevertheless, the addition of Durud after the du’a of Qunut has been authentically transmitted (mawqufan) as the action (amal) of a few other Sahabah and Senior Tabi’un (radiyallahu ‘anhum).

(Refer: At-Talkhisul Habir, Hadith: 1271, Al-Qawlul Badi’ pgs. 374-376, and Al-Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol. 2 pgs. 301-302; Also see: Mukhtasaru Qiyamil Layl, pg. 324)

In view of all the above, it would be appropriate for one to regard the recitation of Durud after the du’a of Qunut a Sunnah.

(Refer: Ad-Durrul Mukhtar with Raddul Muhtar, vol. 4 pg. 232, and Bada’ius Sanai’I vol. 2 pg. 234)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
