‘Ali’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) statement regarding istisqa

Question

What is the reference of this narration and what is the meaning of ‘Go out’?

“When you go out, praise God and praise Him for what is His worthy of, and send salutations to the Prophet, and ask forgiveness, for Istisqa is seeking forgiveness.”

Answer

Imam ‘Abdur Razzaq (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu). ‘Go out’ in this narration refers to going out for Salatul istisqa (going out to beseech Allah to send rains).

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said regarding Istisqa : “When you go out [for istisqa], then praise Allah, Praise him as He is deserving, send salutations [durud] upon Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and seek forgiveness, for istisqa [beseeching Allah for rains] is [essentially] seeking forgiveness.”

(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq: 4904)
