Reconciliation between Hadiths on Sayyidah ‘Aaishah’s (radiyallahu ‘anha) necklace

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

In the following two narrations, one narration indicates that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) himself went to search for the necklace and the second narration indicates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) did not go himself but instead sent the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) to search for the necklace. How does one reconcile between the two narrations?

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 335 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 367)

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 336 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 367)

Answer

Hafiz Ibn Hajar and others (rahimahumullah) have mentioned that these Hadiths do not contradict one another.

It can very easily be understood that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) searched for the necklace alongside the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum).

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 335; Also see: Al-Minhaj, Hadith: 814)

Although mention is made in the second Hadith that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) sent others to look for the necklace, it doesn’t explicitly negate that he also searched for it himself.

Some Muhaddithun have suggested that both of these narrations represent two separate incidents. Accordingly, the possibility of any contradiction would then be neutralized.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 335 and Fadhlul Mun’im, Hadith: 843)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
