Who was Abu Shaybah, Ibrahim ibn ‘Uthman?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Who was the Hadith narrator Ibrahim ibn ‘Uthman?

Answer

Ibrahim ibn ‘Uthman Al-‘Absi, more famously known as Abu Shaybah, was the grandfather of Imams Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah [i.e. Author of the famous Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah] and ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahumullah).

(Al-Kashif along with the footnotes of ‘Allamah Sibt Ibnul ‘Ajami, vol. 1 pg. 63, Number: 174; Also see: Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 11 pg. 122)

Abu Shaybah, the judge of Wasit, was a Tab’ut Tabi’I who passed away in the year 169A.H.

He reported Hadith from: his uncle Hakam ibn ‘Utaybah, Abu Ishaq As-Sabi’I, A’amash and others (rahimahumullah).

Some of his students were: Jarir ibn ‘Abdil Hamid, Walid ibn Muslim, Zayd ibnul Hubab, and others (rahimahumullah).

The Muhaddithun have passed unanimous verdicts declaring Abu Shaybah to be a weak, if not very weak, narrator. The narrations he reports will therefore be graded accordingly.

(Refer: Al-Kashif along with the footnotes of Shayk Muhammad ‘Awwamah – hafizahullah -, vol. 1 pg. 63-64, Al-Mughni Fid Du’afa, vol. 1 pg. 55, Number: 125, Diwanud Du’afa, Number: 211, Tahdhibut Tahdhib, vol. 1 pgs. 144-145, and Taqribut Tahdhib, Number: 215)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
