Missing fasts due to pregnancy.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. A Muslim brother’s wife was pregnant and nearing her term, however Ramadhan was nearing and he was advised by a well known scholar, that she does not fast due to her condition and pay the sadaqah for the days missed. In my very little knowledge of islam and my intellect, this guidence seems very strange. She isn’t ill in any way so that she can never fast, would she simply have to make up for these days lost when she can finally fast? As I understand, paying the sadaqah is for those whom cannot fast due to medical reasons or age.

A. Yes, she must make up for the missed days when she can fast. Paying the fidiyah (redemption) is only for those who are permanently unable to observe the fast due to old age or sickness.

And Allah knows best.
