Can one use blue-black hair dye?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Assalaamu Alaikum,
Is it jaiz to use blue-black hair dye? Will the blue-black colour contain black in it?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

الجواب و بالله التوفيق

The prohibition is to use pure black. As such, the mixture of the two will not fall under this prohibition. Hence, it will be allowed to use the blue-black hair dye.

An important point to note however, is that in the matter of colouring one’s hair as is done today, one must not do so to imitate the unbelievers and to follow their trends and styles. The Prophet (S.A.S) has strictly prohibited the Muslims from imitating others, especially the unbelievers and immoral people. In this regard, he is reported to have said, ‘Whoever imitates a people is one of them.’ (Abu Dawood, Hadith #. 4031).

And Allah Knows Best.
