Rich Muslims not paying Zakaah.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:

A remark has been used that rich Muslims have not been paying Zakaah. Can one use such statements?

Answer:

The authentic saying of the Prophet Muhammad (Upon whom be Peace) teaches us to be very discreet in giving charity and doing good works to the extent that he said, “What the right hand gives, the left hand must have no knowledge of it”. (Tirmizi).

In light of such teachings many Muslims try their best to be discreet, especially when they are giving zakaah or other forms of charity. It is therefore wrong for anyone to look at a person and assume that he/she is not paying zakaah. Statements of this nature should not be made by anyone. Even if an individual is not paying his/her zakaah, then he/she is accountable only to Allah, their creator and it is not the business of another person. Obviously one must always be encouraged to do that which is right, however no one can be forced to do so.

And Allah knows best.
