Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Some food requires you to cook with alcohol.

I was wondering if that food becomes haram even though by the time the food is done, there is no alcohol content in the food anymore.

Answer:

In The Name Of Allah, The Most-Merciful, The Most Kind

It is not permissible to cook with alcohol.

Firstly, when you cook with alcohol, it is a myth that alcohol fully evaporates from the food. Even after cooking food with alcohol in it for 2.5 hours, some of it still remains. Furthermore, it is chemically impossible to remove all the alcohol because it binds itself to the water in the food.

Even if only a little bit of alcohol was to remain, it would still not be permitted, because there is a consensus that whatever amount it is haram to drink alcohol, whether it is a little bit or a lot. (Ibn Abideen, RaddulMuhtaar, Volume 6, page 448-9)

Secondly, alcohol is considered to be from the major filth (najas mughal lazhah), like urine, so adding alcohol to your food will render it as naajis (impure)also. (Raddul Muhtaar, Volume 6, Pages 449)
