Interest Based Student Loan

Question:

Assalamu Alaikkum warahma tullahi wabarakatu

All praise is due to Allah peace and blessing be upon our beloved Prophet Mohamed.

I wanted to enquire on what could be a major issue here in the U.K for many students. As you may be aware that university require funding of £9,250 per year. Governments have allowed students to take out loans from but it comes with a catch, which is interest. Interest also known as riba is impermissible, however the only option to continue and enhance my son’s studies is to attend a university.

As I am financially unable to provide the payment and no available assets that can be used in aid of the payment. Additional my wife is just housewife leaving no other alternative available.

Therefore is taking the loan permissible under certain circumstances?

May Allah have mercy on you for taking out the time to help me in this issue.

Jazakallah

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It would not be permissible to take an interest bearing loan to further your sons studies. You may consider applying for financial aid/bursary for your son if that is available to you.
