Acupuncture Treatment While Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

Is acupuncture treatment allowed while fasting?

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Jazāk Allāh for contacting Mathabah for our question.

“Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that treats patients by insertion and manipulation of needles in the body” (Wikipedia).

Acupuncture treatment that only entails insertion of needles in various parts of the body is permitted while fasting and will not render the fast invalid. Nothing enters the internal stomach cavity nor the internal mind, hence the fast will remain intact and valid. (See Rad Al Muḥtār)

Ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ikramah (may Allah be pleased with him) have stated,

“The fast is invalidated by [only] what enters the internal stomach cavity.” (Bukhārī)

And Allāh Knows Best
