Making an intention not to commit a certain wrong deed

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. What is the difference between oath and niyat?

2. I made a niyat to Allah Ta’ala that ‘me niyat karta hu aaj ke baad TV aur movies nahi dekhuga ‘ but I did not take Allah Ta’ala’s name? Is my niyat valid?

3. If I break my niyat? Will I be sinful?

Bismillaah

A:

1 – 2. If it is just a niyyat without taking the name of Allah Ta`ala then it is not a pledge or promise.

3. Obviously when you have intended something for the sake of Allah Ta`ala then respect and loyalty with Allah Ta`ala requires that you honour that intention.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: I want to make some changes to my niyyat, if I break it and re take it, what will I have to do?

For example, when my father’s blood report came abnormal I made a niyyat that I wont watch movies and T V from now. After few months his report came normal Alhamdulillah. I haven’t watched any movie or TV till now, but one of my favourite movies is going to be released next month and I am scared that I will end up watching it and break my niyyat. Do I have pay kafaraah or can I make some changes in my niyyat, pay kafaraah and re take it?

Bismillaah

A: To become disloyal and unfaithful to Allah Ta`ala is really something serious and shameful.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
