Taking from entrusted money

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamualaikum,

My question is regarding business in the right way acording to the Sharia law. I want to ask if it is permissible to do a dropshipping business but without being online. For example, someone tells me they want to buy an ipad and they tell me to find one, then i tell them the price of the item, let’s say £200 pounds, they pay me the money in advance and i go buy the ipad they want for cheaper, let’s say for £180 pounds and i keep the £20 pounds as profit. Will this money be halal? Is this allowed in Islam? If not then please tell me if there is a way to make it permissible.

JazakAllah,

Assalamualaikum

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu.

In the example given you state that you have taken £200 in advance and will now proceed to purchasing the product on behalf of the person.

By purchasing the product for a person with their money, you are acting as an agent. The money you have been given is a trust. It is not permissible to take money for yourself from the entrusted money. The money gained through this method will not be Halal[1].

Here are a few permissible alternatives:

1)    You may purchase the product for yourself with your own money and then sell it to the person at whichever price you agree upon. In this case you should clarify with the person that you purchased the item with your own money and you are selling the item to him.

2)    You can clarify with the customer in advance that you will be taking a fixed commission for your service of searching and purchasing on their behalf.
