Dying due to stomach illness; reading Surah Yasin and Mulk 40 times

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

As Salam alaykum, My question is what is the status of a Muslim who dies due to stomach illness? Reading surah yasin and surah mulk 40 times each the funeral is departed from the house is beneficial for the dead person. How far is it true? Thank you.

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

1.      A Muslim who passes away due to illness from the stomach will be regarded a shaheed. Consider the following Hadith of Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam),

Translation: “Martyrdom is of seven types besides being killed in the path of Allaah. The one who dies of the plague is a martyr; the one who dies of a stomach related sickness is a martyr; the one who drowns is a martyr; the one who is crushed by a falling building is a martyr; the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr; the one who is burned to death is a martyr, and the woman who dies in pregnancy is a martyr.” (Nasaai 1846)

2.      In principle, reciting the Qur’aan on behalf of the deceased is beneficial for the deceased. However, there is no basis for stipulating the above two surahs and reciting them forty times.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
