A follow up query on the narration ‘A believer is not instilled with deception and lies’

Regarding this narration ‘A Believer is instilled with a number of qualities except deception and lying’, you have stated, ‘Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu).’

So is this not a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

Answer

Imams Bazzar and Abu Ya’la (rahimahumallah) have recorded this as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Musnad Bazzar, Hadith: 1139, Musnad Abi Ya’la, Hadith: 711)

However, Imam Abu Zur’ah, Imam Daraqutni and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumullah) have preferred the mawquf version. i.e. As the statement of Sayyiduna Sa’d  ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and not a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) states that this [the mawquf] is the correct version.

(Refer: Kitabul ‘Ilal of Imam Ibn Abi Hatim, 2506, Al ‘Ilal of Imam Daraqutni, 602 and As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 10 pg. 197. Also see: Footnotes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah -hafizahullah- on Musannaf, Hadith: 26117)

The narration should therefore be quoted as the statement of Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
