Hadiths on the Sirat / Pul Sirat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Please advise if there is any mention of the Pul Sirat in the Hadith. There are people nowadays who question its existence saying there is no direct mention of it in Quran and Hadith and that the term pul is a Persian derivative therefore the concept is an innovation.

Answer

The  bridge over Jahannam is generally referred to in the Indian sub-continent as the ‘Pul Sirat’. This word is a combination of the Arabic and the Urdu/Persian words for bridge. In Arabic, the word ‘sirat’ translates as bridge.

There are several Hadiths that mention this bridge and its descriptions. See some of them here.

To refute the existence of the sirat (bridge over Jahannam) is incorrect. ‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has listed more than twenty such Hadiths.

(Refer: Al-Budurus Safirah, Hadith:  1021-1041. Also see At-Tadhkirah, pg.295)

Reference to the sirat is also found in the Quran, Surah Maryam, Ayah: 71.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
