Hadith on giving the elders first

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is there any Hadith which mentions that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wa salaam) once gave some drink (after drinking some) to the sahabi on his right and advised him to give it to the elder Sahabi after him.

Answer

There is a famous hadith that appears in Sahih Bukhari several times, which states that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) after drinking, saw a young sahabi (Sayyiduna ibn ‘Abbas) on his right and an elder Sahabi on his left. Since the person on the right has first right, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) asked Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma) if he would forgo his right so that the senior Sahabi could be served before him. Sayyiduna ibn ‘Abbas refused as he wanted to be blessed with the left over of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam).

(Sahih Bukhari, hadith: 5620)

This narration mentions that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) requested the young Sahabi before he was to drink and not after, as in your query.

I haven’t come across any narration that supports your version.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
