Should we hide our blessings?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Should we hide our blessings so that we may not be affected by the evil eye?

Is there any Hadith about it?

Jazakallahu khayran

Answer

1. When Nabi Yusuf (‘alayhis salam) was blessed with the famous dream, his father Nabi Ya’qub (‘alayhis salam) told him to conceal it from his brothers who may end up envying him….

(Surah Yusuf, Ayah: 5)

2. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasalam) said:

There will [always] be those who are jealous of those who have been blessed, so beware of them.

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 7277; Majma’uz zawaid, vol.8 pg.195)

The message in the above ayah and Hadith  clearly supports the notion of concealing one’s blessings as far as possible, from those who may become envious.

The Hadith books also cite another narration with a similar meaning. See: Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 103, Takhrijul Kash-shaf of Zayla’i, vol.2 pg.360 and Sharhul Ihya, vol.8 pg.54.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
