Is ‘Hadithul ifk’ mutawatir?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I came across a contemporary takhrij of a compilation of Hadith about the ‘Hadithul ifk’ [The Hadith of the lie/slander] originally done by ‘Abdul Ghani Al-Maqdisi. I was surprised to know that there are so many different chains of transmission on this story. I know that it is mentioned in Surah Nur but I’m specifically wondering with regards to just taking into account the Ahadith that make explicit mention of Sayyidatuna ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha), would the sheer number of chains in this book lead us to state that the ‘Hadithul ifk’ (excluding the verses of Surah Nur) is mutawatir bil m’ana?

Answer

I haven’t seen any of the Muhaddithun who discuss Mutawatir Hadiths labelling the Hadith of ifk as such.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
