Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) passes judgement in favour of a jew

Is this incident true?

Answer

Yes. This incident is recorded in Muwatta Imam Malik.

(Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 2104)

Translation

A Muslim and a Jew brought their case to Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Sayyiduna ‘Umar believed that the Jew was correct and subsequently passed judgement in favour of the Jew. The Jew said, ‘By Allah You have passed a just ruling.’ Sayyiduna ‘Umar nudged him and said, ‘How do you know?’ The Jew said, We saw [in the Tawrah] that whenever a Judge passes a just ruling, there are two Angels on either side of him guiding him and inspiring him to utter the truth, as long as he remains just and on truth. As soon as he abandons passing just rulings, they leave him and ascend to the sky.
