Dealing with Wudhu Waswasa: My 15-Year Struggle

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have been suffering from waswasa of wudhu breaking for the past 15 years… Sometimes within the 15 years when I am making wudhu for salaah or after I make wudhu for salaah, I am certain my wudhu is breaking because I am passing wind. A mufti advised me that I should only consider my wudhu broken if I hear a sound or get a smell (odor) with the movement of wind from the back passage. However, now recently whenever I am making wudhu I am certain I am passing wind with a smell (odor). I don’t know if I am so certain my wudhu is breaking in the above manner because I am OCD and imagining it or if it is real but it certainly is real to me. I am not managing to read some of my salaah because of this ….what should I do?

Bismillaah

A: Until you are not certain consider yourself to be in the state of wudhu.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
