Rolling a Dice in Mathematics

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Is it permissible to roll a dice when demonstrating the concept of random numbers or probability in mathematics?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Yes, it is only gambling or playing games of chance that is sinful. Merely demonstrating the concept of random numbers or probability in mathematics is fine.

At the same time, you should try to explain to the students that there is no such thing as random, of course, because everything happens because of God’s will. If the educational system prohibits this, then keep it to yourself.

I pray this helps.
