What Is the Ruling Of a Virtual Sin?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Would it be permissible to possess, buy, or sell a virtual pig, drug, prostitute, or promote LGBTQ? What is the status of a virtual action like the consumption of alcohol or pork, performance of magic, illicit sex acts, public nudity, murder, or worshipping an idol? Are actions performed within a virtual world punishable?

Answer:

Assalamu alaykum,

Doing such activities in a virtual world is impermissible because of their immoral content and fitna. Please see this answer for the source:

One must know that involving oneself in such activities pollutes the mind and soul and creates unhealthy desires and temptations. The waste of time and bad role modeling for children is obvious, and one would do well to cut such addictions and nonsense out of one’s life. The life of religion and piety is beautiful, and one should be avid to be one “upon whom there is no fear and will not grieve.“
