What the Qur’an says about dating

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: What does the Qur’an say about dating and extramarital relations?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Sex is not considered bad in Islam. What is considered bad and low is extramarital relations.

Allah Most High says, ‘And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers.’ [Qur’an 5:5]

Although it is not forbidden to marry someone who one is in a sinful relationship with, such a man or woman is not necessarily the best person for one’s long term success in this life or the next.
