Is it permissible for someone who works on a boat to shorten his prayers and to omit the Friday prayer, even if it is not difficult for him to perform them on the boat? And is it permissible for him to leave the Friday prayer even if it is being performed on a boat?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

If this worker on the boat has begun a long trip that is over 81 kilometers and he has passed beyond the limits of his city, it is permissible for him to take the dispensation of travelers and join between the two prayers of dhuhr and `asr and maghrib and `isha. He may also shorten the prayers of dhuhr, `asr, and `isha, even if it is not difficult for him to pray the full number and pray each prayer in its own time. He may do this until he returns to his his home city or until he takes up residence in a different city.

As for the Friday prayer, the obligation to pray it is dropped from anyone who is traveling even if the travel is short, meaning less than 81 kilometers, however with the condition that he has already passed beyond the limits of his city and that he has traveled before dawn of Friday. If Friday’s dawn comes in while he is still in his city, and then he traveled, the obligation of the Friday prayer is not dropped from him. In that case, it is unlawful for him to travel unless he will pray the Friday prayer during his travel, such that he stops in a town where people are praying the Friday prayer. […].

There is also another strong saying in our school that permits one to travel after the Friday’s dawn, even if he will miss the Friday prayer, but it is better not to follow this position except upon need.

As for praying the Friday prayer in a boat on the ocean, this is not valid in our school, for one of the conditions for the validity of the Friday prayer is that it take place among the constructed dwellings of the community. So, it can not take place in the desert, nor on the ocean.
