Is modest dancing permitted for women? What are its limits and guidelines?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

If dancing comprises folding the limbs [h: such as the waist] as corrupt and effeminate men and women do, then it is forbidden for both men and women. If it does not comprise this, then it is permitted for both men and women because, as the scholars state, it is mere movements of straightening and curving, and [h: such movements] are not forbidden. It has been established in a rigorously authenticated hadith that a group of Abyssinians danced in the mosque in front of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) and he did not condemn them.
