Mahram and non mahram

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

I wanted to know if my (maternal or paternal) uncle’s wife is mahram (unmarriageable close relative) or non mahram to me?Can she hug me or not? And what about my grandmother’s/grandfather’s sisters?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Compassionate.

Your maternal or paternal uncle’s wife is not your mahram. You may not hug her or touch her, for that is unlawful. However, this does mean that you must be cold towards her. She may turn away from you and the religion if she considers you harsh and rude. Mind your manners with her and be caring and thoughtful.

Your grandparent’s sister is your mahram (unmarriageable close relative).

And Allah knows best.
