Can we play with non-Muslims?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Is it permissible to play with non-Muslims like Chinese and Mexicans?

There is no rule in Shariat concerning play and sports, that the person you are playing with has to be Muslim; but we should be aware of the consequences of playing with certain people. If by playing with or being in the company of certain people there is a danger of doing certain things which are against the rules set by Shariat, then it is necessary to stay away from them. Because by playing with them we would be spending time in their company;
and if by continuously spending time in their company there is a possibility of being affected in a negative way, then we should stay away from them.

Then, there are certain rules that are associated with the game itself. The purpose of playing should be exercise and staying healthy, but not wasting time. And if participating in any sort of game puts us in neglect of any of Allah’s commandments, for example: missing prayers, dressing in an inappropriate manner, not covering satr etc., then it is not allowed.
