Prophet Nuh (A.S) and his son

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

What about Noah’s son? According to Surah 21:76, Noah and his family is saved from the flood, and Surah 37:77 confirms that his seed survived. But Surah 11:42-43 reports that Noah’s son drowns. Please confirm.

Allah (sbt) promised Hazrat Nooh that he would protect him and his family. But the definition of family means those who believe; and because his son was not a believer he was not counted as part of his family. Those who believed were protected. A verse of he Quran states that those members of his family who were believers will be protected. In that verse of the Quran where there is a reference that his son was not protected, there is also a reference that even though he was his son but because he was not a believer, he was not counted as amongst the family; that’s why he was drowned.
