If it is true why haven’t they got married, what are the circumstances in which a Muslim is allowed to live without getting married . For example it is famous about Imam shaafi that he did not get married. And also I would like to know the meaning of hadith the mafhoom of which is “Nikah is my sunnah and whosoever abstain from my sunnah is not amongst us”.

Before Islam, people used to think that to get closer to God, they must forsake the pleasure of this world. Some people, themselves, prefer to live an ascetic life by not marrying, etc. to get proximity with God. The prophet peace be upon him rejected this and said to have kids and wives is my way of life and Islam does not teach asceticism. The prophet peace be upon him said that marriage is my ‘sunnah’
and whosoever deviates from it I have no relationship with him.
If somebody has an excuse then it is understandable, and there is no sin for not marrying. Some of the pious people and scholars who did not marry had excuses. Some of them were so engrossly involved in the worship of Allah that they knew if they married they would not be able to fulfill the rights of their families. However, the report about imam shafi is not correct. But in his school of thought it is preferred to engage in worship then to marry. It is possible because of his school of thought, somebody mistakenly thought of him that way, which is not right.
