If someone who started to fast only this year, so what should he/she do for the previously missed fasts?

If someone who started to fast only this year, so what should he/she do for the previously missed fasts? Should that person make them up or pay “kaffarah” expiation.
After maturity however many fasts were missed have to be made up; if, may god forbid, someone dies before making up all the fast then that person should bequest from his will or testament to pay off the “fidyah” for the fast he missed.
