COVID-19 Baccine

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum

I am a healthcare worker and I want to know is it permissible to get COVID-19 vaccine ?

The following are some of the variants of the vaccine:

(1) If the vaccine contains halal ingredients, its use is strictly correct.

(2) In the present circumstances, if the ingredients are not known and the predominant assumption is that it contains only halal ingredients, then its use is correct.

Unless it is certain that the haram ingredients are mixed in it, it cannot be declared haram simply because of the suspicion of mixing the haram ingredients.

However, it is better to avoid it as a precaution.

(3) In a vaccine, if haram ingredients are mixed and a chemical transformation takes place, then its use is correct.

And the transformation of the essence means that the basic attributes, properties and effects of the haram thing on which the principle upon which Halal and Haram is based are eliminated automatically, or by chemical means, and if the scholars have researched and ordered the change of nature, then its use will be correct.

(4) It is not permissible to use the vaccine if the haram ingredients are mixed in it, but the final product is not completely transformed. However, if there is no alternative cure, without it, and the opinion of the medical experts is that the treatment is possible only by it, and there is no lawful alternative to it, in which case it will be allowed to be used as a matter of necessity. It should be well understood that use of vaccines is allowed only if there is a disease.

In case a person wants to get vaccinated before the disease, it

will not be permissible to use the vaccine if the mixture of haram ingredients is confirmed to have been included.

Note: Nowadays, the use of vaccines for travel is generally considered mandatory by the government, in which case the use of the vaccine is the same as mentioned above.

Moreover, if there is certainty or predominant suspicion of mixed haram ingredients in the vaccine, then it is allowed to use it only for the necessary travel, otherwise abstain from its use.

According to Fatawa Shami:
