Question: I am a female teenager who dresses Islamically and follows the Sharia to the best
of my ability. I do not take part in stuff that other teenagers my age do. I would like to
know what the Qur’an and Sunnah say about falling in love with a Muslim boy, who also
practices Islam. Is it impermissible (haram)? I am not asking about dating this boy, just
whether it is haram to fall in love with him and talk to him whenever I see him.
Answer: In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
Love itself is an emotion that you have little direct control over. What you think about and what
you do are things you can control, and are morally responsible for before Allah.
When any worldly love impinges on the purity of one’s love for Allah and His Messenger (peace
and blessings be upon him), then we chose lasting love over love that does not last.
The Beloved Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “None of you
[truly] believes until I am more beloved to them than their parents, children, and all people.”

Mawlana Rumi (Allah have mercy on him) said, “The Divine love turns copper into gold and
makes the bitter sweet. It humbles a king and gives life to the dead.”
And Allah alone gives success.
Wassalam.
