Do Baseball Caps Fulfill the Sunna of Covering One’s Head?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Does a baseball hat or cap fulfill the sunnah of covering one’s head during prayer or generally?

Answer

I pray you are well.

Yes, baseball caps and hats do fulfill the sunna of covering one’s head. In general, modest clothing from any culture would fulfill the sunnas of dress.

However, wearing clothing similar to what the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), such as kufi, turbans, long shirts, etc., with the intention of following him in his dress and mannerisms, is praiseworthy and rewarded. [Buti, Fiqh al-Sira]

The Sunna of embodying good character is also a very important one. It was the essence of the way of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace): “Clearly, the only reason for why I was sent was to complete righteous character.” [Ahmad]

May Allah make us of those who embody the way of the Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) inwardly and outwardly.
