Is Donating Blood Permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Salman Younas

Question: I am thinking of donating blood but before making any appointments I want to know if it is permissible?

Answer: assalamu alaykum

It would be permissible for you to donate blood to institutes like blood banks that utilize it for cases of medical need and necessity as long as it is safe for you to do so.

Although the default ruling is that blood transfusions are not permitted because blood is (a) part of the human body and (b) filthy, classical jurists made an exception when there was genuine need. [Fatawa al-Hindiya (5:355)]
