Developing software for stock trading company

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

There is a company, which buy and sell stocks of different companies all over the world. Basically it is a trading company and deals in stocks only. They are in a process of developing a software application or a system which will help them to take a decision regarding selling or buying of shares. This involves lots of computation and internet traffic, which cause some latency. If a brother is hired as a software developer by the company and his job will be to optimize the whole process. Is working for such a position permissible according to shariah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The buying and selling of shares is in itself permissible. Thus, it would be permitted to develop software related to this line of work–even if then the company uses one’s work in some ways that are not completely permissible according to the Shariah.

The general principle is that if (a) one’s work itself and (b) one’s line of work are themselves permitted, then one’s work would be permissible–even if it is then used in some impermissible ways. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Abu’l Haajj, Risala fi’l I`ana `ala’l haram)

And Allah alone gives success.
