Joining Tarawih late, combining Isha

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

if one comes late to tarawih and hasn’t prayed isha, can one make intention of isha, join imaam in two rakats of tarawih. then when imaam says salaam, get up and do two more to make it four for isha. is this allowed in the hanafi mathab?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

In the Hanafi school, one cannot perform an obligatory prayer behind an imam performing a sunna (such as tarawih) or even a different obligatory prayer. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah)

In the case mentioned, one should first pray Isha on one’s own, and then join the tarawih congregation. (ibid.)

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
