Group Supplication

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

With regards to group supplication, is it permissible if the format is as follows: One person loudly recites a dua that has been narrated from some companions and awliya’a (this can go on for almost half an hour), and the rest listen or follow the written words of the dua so they can understand the meanings of the dua. Sometimes, some phrases of the dua are repeated loudly by everyone. This is all of course assuming that the words of the dua are uncontroversial and are aimed at asking Allah SWT for forgiveness and rizq etc Also, is the answer to the above affected if the group of Muslims who do this form of group supplication recite that specific dua’a every week on a given night?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

If free of anything otherwise reprehensible in the Shariah (such as deeming such a gathering necessary or looking down at those who don’t attend), getting together for group remembrance and supplication is permitted and praiseworthy in the Shariah.
