Would it be permissible according to the Hanafi school of thought for one to donate their Zakah

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Would it be permissible according to the Hanafi school of thought for one to donate their Zakah to SunniPath.com for the provision of Islamic Knowledge?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

As mentioned in various answers on www.SunniPath.com, the position of sound Sunni scholarship is that end recipient of zakat must be a poor or needy Muslim individual.

It is not valid to give zakat to institutions or projects, unless it is known and understood that the funds are zakat and will be directed towards such Muslim individuals.

Thus, you can give your zakat to SunniPath, but must make it clear that it is zakat, in order for it to be used appropriately.

Please go to www.SunniPath.com, and search for giving zakat to institutions and mosques.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
