Wiping Shiny Things

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

We can clean shiny things simply by wiping with a clean cloth, but how do we define something being shiny? Shaykh Nuh mentioned that we can wipe a toilet seat clean, but a toilet seat isn’t as shiny as, say a mirror is. Please clarify.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

It is not “shiny things” but, rather, smooth surfaces that do not have indentations or pores. Such surfaces, which includes a lot of things in our modern environment can be freed of filth (najasa) by mere wiping. After this, they remain pure even when wetted.

Wassalam,
Faraz.
