Praying in the rain

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

an imam at a local masjid advised me that if i perform salaah in the rain then my namaaz is invalid. i also had another friend who suggested that rainwater is pure and therefore does not invalidate namaaz. if rainwater does invalidate namaaz then will it also make your clothes impure if left to dry outside and they get wet in rain.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
There is nothing to affirm that rainwater would affect the validity of one’s prayer. Rather, Allah Most High refers Himself to the purity of rainwater and it being a great blessing in the Qur’an [Zumar: 21; Anfal: 11] And the scholars have explicitly affirmed that one can make wudu with rainwater. (Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah) So how would it invalidate one’s prayer?
It would appear unwise, however, to pray in heavy rain without need, though, if one is likely to be distracted.
And Allah alone gives success.

Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth?

and he caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to plant your feet firmly therewith.

and We send down pure water from the sky,-
