Observing Order in Make-Ups

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Sohail Hanif, SunniPath Academy Teacher

Does one have to make his make-up prayers in order (i.e. Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha)? is it permissible if one has a large number of qadha to change the tarteeb for example if one is in a mosque in order to hide the qadha (i.e. make two rakaas of Fajr after Maghrib (in place of the two nafls) when in the tarteeb 4 rakaas of Asr should be made?

One is obliged to make up prayers that one has missed by unanimous agreement of the four Sunni schools of thought.

If the total number of prayers that one is missed equal five or less then one must observe the order between them and one’s current prayer such that one must make them all up before one can offer one’s current prayer unless the time for the current prayer grows short in which case it is given preference.

If the total number of prayers that one has missed exceeds five then one is not obliged to observe any order between the make ups with respect to themselves such that one may make up Dhuhr before making up Fajr for any particular day. One is also not obliged, in such a case, to make up one’s prayers before offering the current prayer even if there is enough time to make them up. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, 1:487, Bulaq)
