Deliberately going late to uninspiring Friday sermons

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf Mangera

Is it blameworthy to delay attending the jumah prayer until the last 10 minutes because the khutbah has consistently proved to be spiritually disempowering and depressing. I find sitting through many of these khutbahs actually agitating to the point that I feel worse spiritually after leaving jumah then before. I live in the United States.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer of truth.

The sermon for the Friday prayer is necessary to participate in and should not be missed. However,

if a person happens to miss the sermon but catches the prayer the prayer is still valid.

If it is not possible for you to pray in another masjid, then approach the committee or people in charge, and see if any changes can be made.

If this is to no avail, then you may sit and learn to ignore the parts you find to be spiritually harming. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would sit through sermons delivered by some of the corrupt governors and rulers of their time.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam
Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
