Performing three rakaats by mistake

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What to do if I pray three rakaats Salaah in asr by mistake? Should I have to repeat the namaaz or sajdaa sahu will be enough to complete the namaz? Also if I forget which rakaat I am in, then what should I do?

Bismillaah

A:

1. The Salaah will have to be repeated.

2. Follow the dominant portion of your mind (i.e. what your mind is more inclined to) in trying to work out which rakaat you are in and thereafter continue with your salaah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
