Sitting and performing the two rakaats nafil after witr Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I usually pray two rakaats sitting after witr since this was the practise of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alyhi Wasallam). However, I now came across a Hadith saying that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) didn’t do these rakats 100% sitting, rather he stood up before ruku and made the ruku from a standing position. Can you please advice how to perform the two rakats. The hadith is: “He observed thirteen rak’ahs (in the night prayer). He observed eight rak’ahs and would then observe Witr and then observe two rak’ahs sitting, and when he wanted to bow he stood up and then bowed down, and then observed two rak’ahs in between the Adhaan and lqama of the dawn prayer.” (Sahih Muslim)

Bismillaah

A: At times the last Salaah Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed used to be witr and at times the last Salaah Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed used to be the two rakaats nafil while sitting after witr. At the end of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s) Mubaarak life, due to old age and weakness, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) sometimes performed the tahajjud and the two rakaats nafil after witr while sitting. In regard to the manner Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed the Salaah sitting, there are two types of Ahaadith. The first type of Ahaadith mention, that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) sat throughout the tahajjud Salaah. The second type of Ahaadith explains that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed the Salaah in the manner recorded in Muslim Shareef. In that case the method of his Salaah was that he commenced the Salaah standing and thereafter sat or he commenced the Salaah sitting and thereafter stood. The Muhadditheen commentate that both these Ahaadith related to different occasions. Nevertheless it should be known that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) receives full reward in the case he performed the tahajjud or nafil Salaah sitting without any excuse. As far as the ummat is concerned, if they sit and perform the tahajjud or nafil Salaah without any excuse, they will only receive half reward.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
