Going to work in iddat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: May Allah reward you for the good work you provide for our ummah. My question is if a wifes husband passes away does she have to complete her iddat on the excuse of saving her job? The husband has left an amount of R130 000 in the bank account. Wife has about R100 000 in her account. Wifes father Alhamdulilah is quite wealthy and he only has two daughters. All in the family are working and earning. Its a government job. Sshe has the fear that if she stays on for her husbands iddat there “might” be a risk of losing her job. We do know that south africa is a freedom of religion country. We do know that if she does not go to work, there will be enough to take care of her needs in the four months of iddat. If she stays in after looking at all this is she still allowed to leave her iddat for her job?

A: If she can request the company to excuse her in the duration of the iddat that will be the best.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
