Purpose of Qurbaani

Q: 

1. What is the purpose of Qurbani in Shariah?
2. What are the benefits of Qurbani, how would you explain in detail to a non Muslim?

A: 

1. It is the sunnat of Ebrahim (alaihis salaam) and the command of the Shari`ah.
2. Don’t be concerned about the non-Muslim. The fact that it is the command of Allah Ta`ala is sufficient.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

عن زيد بن أرقم رضي الله عنه قال قال أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : يا رسول الله ما هذه الأضاحي ؟ قال : سنة أبيكم إبراهيم عليه السلام. قالوا : فما لنا فيها يا رسول الله ؟ قال : بكل شعرة حسنة . قالوا : فالصوف يا رسول الله ؟ قال : بكل شعرة من الصوف حسنة.  رواه أحمد وابن ماجه (مشكوة المصابيح رقم 1476)
