Q: I would like to know where the method of devising shares in an animal for qurbani has its origins, that is one share in a sheep and seven shares in a cow, camel, etc. Is it in the Quran and Hadeeth? All my life, I have practiced this concept, but recently I met someone who is of the opinion that you cannot have 7 shares in cow, etc. Please explain?
A: This does appear in the Hadith that the cow and camel will be divided into seven shares.
عن جابر قال : نحرنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم عام الحديبية البقرة عن سبعة والبدنة عن سبعة (رواه الترمذي 1/276)
