Bleeding for more than 40 days after childbirth

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: When I gave birth to my child I had the normal bleeding for 40 days. After 40 days I started to pray but my bleeding has still not stopped. It goes away for 3-4 days then comes again. Now I am confused like when do I need to pray and when not.

Bismillaah

A: If this is your first haiz, then the entire period of 40 days is your nifaas. The bleeding experienced after the 40 days is istihaazah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
