Looking at people from one’s window

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I sometimes watch people from my windows. Is this permissible or considered to be spying?

Bismillaah

A: If you are referring to looking at people who are inside their homes, then this is not permissible as you are invading their privacy. However, if you are referring to looking at people who are moving about in the open (e.g. walking on the road), then this is not regarded as spying on people, though they are not aware of you looking at them. However, it is futile to stare at people. Muslims refrain from futile actions.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
