Q: My sister is getting married soon. My ummi insists that she applies mendhi on her nails for the engagement/nikaah. She just wants patterns on her hands and feet. What’s the relevance of mendhi at nikaah time and where and how should it be applied?
A: Applying mehndhi is sunnah for women. Similarly it is permissible for women to draw patterns as long as it does not resemble the styles of kuffaar.
